Side Hustles Teachers Online

Most teachers find that their dedication and hard work don’t pay off financially. So many of us are looking for side jobs for teachers online or otherwise to supplement our income.

Some may call them side jobs for teachers or side hustles for teachers. No matter what you call it, we are looking for second jobs for teachers.

Despite the fact that many teachers do find teaching enjoyable, many of us are finding it hard to pay the bills and still be there for our own families.

Am I right?

One in six teachers had to have a second job in 2019, according to Pew Research Center, and many of them worked all year.

The pressure and stress of holding down two jobs outside of the home have only increased teachers’ need to practice self-care, which is hard for many of us.

Teachers should be paid more, especially when you consider our education, time, and labor. But we are not and so the search continues for the perfect side job for teachers.

Online side jobs for teachers are the answer, especially if you prefer working from home and using the computer. You may easily fit it into your hectic teaching schedule.

Here are some fantastic side jobs for teachers online that can earn you extra money and introduce you to a new passion.

And who knows, perhaps one of these online side jobs for teachers can lead to you replacing your teacher income altogether. It can happen!

Side jobs for teachers

Side Jobs For Teachers Online Who Like To Write

  1. Freelance Writer: One of the simplest methods to earn money on the side is through freelancing.

There are numerous methods to get started, including looking on employment sites like Problogger and Blogging Pro

Also, you can directly pitch blogs, websites, and publications. But if you like writing you can just start your own blog and write for someone else while you work on your own.

Low entry barriers to getting clients are provided through platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, because they provide access to a network of people who want your services.

  1. Proofreader: Hello English teachers!! And of course, any other teacher who likes to read and is good at catching those grammar mistakes.

In other words, calling all words nerds. 🙂

There are so many companies and small businesses that need someone with what I like to call good eyes. LOL!!

As someone who is Dyslexic, spelling has always been my enemy. I don’t spell very well. Don’t be surprised if you see a mistake or two here.

As a result of that, I hire proofreaders all the time when I am self-publishing my work or writing copy for my website.

Once I am able, I will hire one to join my team part-time to proof my blog. But for now, I’ll hold it down the best I can.

This will pair well with a teacher who has the skill set to do this. You can offer your services on Fiverr and Upworks.

There are also big-time bloggers and publishing companies looking for this skill set.

  1. Transcriber: Working as a transcriber means typing up transcripts from audio recordings.

Obviously, this will suit teachers with an eagle eye for detail, and a passion for English grammar. It’ll help if you’re a fast typer too!

Companies such as TranscribeMe and REV offer flexible hours and regular payment. All you need to get started is a computer and an internet connection.

You don’t have to have any prior experience, however, you will be asked to take a test to prove your language skills.

  1. Blogging: Yep! That’s right blogging. And it can all be done from the comfort of your home or wherever you are.

Again, you are reading this article and all you did was search “side jobs for teachers online” and because of that, I earn money. Blogging is one of my streams of income.

You can do a teacher blog or any niche you feel you know enough to write about. To be honest, you don’t have to know that much about it and you don’t have to be the best writer.

All it takes is commitment and an understanding of who you are writing articles for- students, parents, other educators, or all the above and then start to share resources and advice with them.

If you are serious about I suggest Teacher Blog Academy. Stacey is amazing!!!!! I love being in her community and her programs are so detailed.

  1. Write E-books: Teachers can create and distribute e-books on a variety of educational subjects.

I could have used this article as an ebook. It’s just not the model I am using right now, but now as I think about it, I just might.

Remember, everything has a market. It’s a matter of being able to speak to that market.

Side Jobs For Teachers Online That Love Teaching

Online Tutor: This is so obvious, right? But, don’t limit yourself. Whether it’s math, science, English, or a foreign language, teachers can provide private online tutoring services in their subject area of expertise.

In addition, you can work for a tutoring company or start your own (we will talk about this later) this has the possibility to work for you no matter your discipline.

You can:

  • Teach English online with no experience
  • Teach English online to adults
  • Teach English online to Korean students
  • Teach English online to Japanese students

If you are interested in teaching English online click here for the best companies I recommend, if not keep reading.

So, maybe a side job for teachers online teaching English isn’t your thing. Check this article out for companies needing tutors in all types of disciplines.

Tutoring as a teacher’s side job online may not make you rich overnight, but it’s not a quick-money scam either.

Earning a primary income or supplementing a full-time career, online tutoring can help meet your goal.

  1. Online Teacher: You may be thinking this is the same thing as a tutor. Close, but no!

The rise of online learning has made it possible for teachers to conduct classes electronically by using video conferencing software.

There are teachers who have online schools. One of my favorites, and may I add that I’ve utilized her services before is Evelyn Corley Shaw.

Evelyn is the founder of Thrive International Academy. She hires virtual teachers for her virtual school. Now, I am not saying she is hiring right now, but my point is you can be a virtual teacher.

You can listen to an excerpt from her book here to learn more about her journey of starting her online educational program.

Another teacher I’ve come across, howbeit, I haven’t worked with her, but I am very impressed is Allison Williams over at Tutor Tots Online

Don’t let the word “tutor” confuse you. She is legit teaching and I love it.

This could be you whether you work for some large company or whether you bet on yourself and start your own. Don’t worry! We’ll talk about this a little later.

  1. Curriculum Development: Teachers can work on developing curricula and lesson plans for districts, schools, after-school programs, and other educational institutions.

My friend Deana over at Needle Movers is currently working with a teacher who is writing Needle Mover’s after-school reading curriculum. The potential is there!

You will have to decide if you want to work for someone else or be your own boss. Personally, I like the idea of teachers hustling for themselves.

However, that route isn’t easy and it’s for sure a journey. I’ll share my thoughts later about teachers starting their own businesses.

  1. Educational Consultant: Although this may require some in-person time, it certainly can still be deemed a side job for teachers online. One that I may add could turn into a full-time income.

If you are a teacher who wants to help schools, districts, or other organizations improve their educational programs this might be the perfect side job for teachers.

One of my favorite Educational Constants is Erica Jordan over at EJT Consulting. She is a rockstar, who is not only an educational consultant, but she teaches others how to be an educational consultant.

Many teachers are starting to capitalize on the skillsets they have to teach others to do what they are doing. In fact, I am doing the same thing.

I teach teachers how to start their own schools, learning pods, ect. This is one big reason I am a fan of teachers starting their own businesses.

Many of these side jobs for teachers online and otherwise can be done without the middleman. However, there is more work involved.

  1. Develop Online Courses: Teachers can develop and design their own online courses, which they can then sell on websites like Coursera or Udemy.

You can also market your course directly to those who want it without using a platform like Coursera or Udemy. Or, you can do both!

  1. Podcasting: Teachers can launch their own educational podcasts to talk about current affairs and educational trends.

I would not even limit it to educational subjects either. Think, what can you teach someone else? If it can be learned there is a market for it.

  1. Online Test Prep Classes: There is a real market here. For standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or GRE, teachers may provide online test preparation services.

Side Jobs For Teachers Online Who Are Well Organized

  1. Virtual Assistant: This is perfect for well-organized teachers who want an online side job for teachers.

Being a virtual assistant allows you to carry out a variety of jobs, such as providing technical help, writing and editing content, managing social media, and producing films or podcasts.

To discover virtual assistant jobs, you can search on a variety of websites, such as Upwork and Fiverr. I mentioned them above too.

Also, you can directly offer your skills to businesses, blogs, or websites that require assistance with article development.

Another fantastic approach to engaging with potential customers is through Facebook groups.

If you want to work for startups established by educators, you should join the Facebook group TPT Virtual Assistant Finder.

Side Jobs For Teachers Online Who Are Creative

  1. Take & Sell Your Pictures: Have you ever considered being paid for photos you have already taken?

For usage on their websites, social media platforms, and marketing collateral, brands, and content producers are constantly searching for fresh and distinctive images.

If you enjoy taking pictures, you may upload your images to a variety of stock photography websites, such as Shutterstock, iStockPhoto, and Adobe Stock.

We need stock images that depict Black and Brown people and a diverse range of people groups. There is a gap there and you can help fill it if you take good pictures.

This is an excellent way to be compensated for your photography skills, albeit each site has various compensation restrictions and requirements.

  1. Start a YouTube Channel: When talking about side jobs for teachers online who are creative, we have to talk about this one.

If you feel at ease in front of the camera, starting a Youtube channel can be a creative and entertaining side business.

You can share your knowledge with people worldwide and establish a more personal connection with an audience.

You will need to set up a channel to get started. Then produce videos focused on a specific subject or market.

Then you may earn money from your channel by selling merchandise, accepting sponsorships, or running ads.

You do have to meet requirements before you are allowed to do these things.

Look at some of your favorite YouTube channels to see what they’re doing that you could copy if you’re unclear about the type of videos to make.

If you need inspiration from someone who is a micro-influencer (basically still small) follow my YouTube channel here for inspiration.

  1.  Start An Esty Store: If you’re crafty or enjoy making things, starting an Etsy store can be a great way to make some extra money.

You can sell anything from handmade crafts to digital products, and there’s a huge market for both.

Please know that the key to success is to create unique and quality products that people want to buy. Also, marketing is everything so market your store effectively.

Having good customer service will help too.

  1. Sell Printables: Believe it or not, printables are a huge thing now. If you have design talent and enjoy doing it, jump on this train.

Don’t know what printables are? They are digital goods that customers may buy and print at home.

To produce your products, you can utilize applications like Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and even Powerpoint.

You can create calendar pages, a daily planner, or whatever. You can sell your printables on your own website or other platforms like Etsy, Shopify, and Creative Market.

Printables are a great business idea because you only need to create them once and then sell them. Passive income at its finest.

Side hustles For Teachers Online Who Are Detailed

  1. Online mentorship & Coaching: Teachers make good coaches and mentors.

They can assist beginning teachers or those wishing to hone their teaching techniques by providing mentoring services, but they are not limited to this.

Coaches can work with teachers who are trying to develop their side hustles (for teachers) into a thriving business. If you are knowledgeable in another area, you can become a coach in that area too.

One of the general statements I make about teachers is that we often have low confidence. Think about it!

I feel like our relationship with the districts we work for is like being in a bad codependent relationship.

Often you want to go, but for whatever reason, you can’t and you feel like we need each other.

Sometimes people do confuse the two (business/life coach) and they can be vastly different.

A Life Coach works on a personal level whereas a Business Coach works with the client on a professional level.

I worked with Sara Torpey who is a coach that helps to uncomplicate business for teachers, helpers, and givers. Sara is a former teacher herself.

The work she did with me was a little of both. I had so much fear, low confidence, and imposter syndrome.

However, we worked through those things. This blog is wholeheartedly the result of my work with her.

To be honest, I made back half my investment in her coaching program within only 4 months of working with her.

As I am sure you know, both mentors and coaches can be very helpful. If you have the right skill set, this might be for you.

  1.  Education Researcher: You could make a great online researcher if you love finding answers to your students’ tricky questions.

Online platforms like Wonder hire researchers to respond to client questions.

If you work for a company like this, they will assign you different client requests.

Your job is then to research the answers, and break down what you find into a digestible response.

That is what we do EVERY day!

  1. Grading Papers: Teachers are already used to grading papers, therefore, you may as well get paid to do it in your spare time.

Companies like Pearson offer teachers $10-12 per hour for “scoring” papers using standardized tests as a guide.

You’ll need a reliable internet connection and a computer, as well as time to commit to weekly hours.

  1. Website Teste: Giving constructive criticism is something teachers are experts in. So how about using those skills in a completely new context?

Companies like User Testing or Try My UI pay website testers to explore new sites and then share their user experience.

These companies expect you to give your opinion and make recommendations on how the sites can be improved.

Average pay is around $10 for a 20-minute test, and more for interviews, and testers can work on their schedule.

Why Side Jobs For Teachers Online Should Be Structured As A Business?

I haven’t used the word “hustle” too much in this article. That is because I have a love\hate relationship with it.

Here is the thing for me, I see “teacher side hustles” as something positive. It’s a good thing because it fills a need- a gap in income for teachers.

Although the word “hustle” can be very positive there is a negative connotation to it.

I hate the idea of teachers out here “working hard” and making things happen by all means when they do it Monday-Friday at a full-time job.

So, why should they have to work that hard to earn extra money to just live? They shouldn’t, but here we are.

Teachers make excellent business owners because we are among the smartest and most qualified people in the country.

We are the singular cause or foundation of all other professions. Kids are able to grow up and become lawyers and doctors because of teachers.

However, one of the reasons, especially with our “side hustles” that we continue to struggle financially is that we allow a middleman between us and the people we serve.

I actually list “The Teacher Middleman Side Hustle” in an article I wrote titled, 35+ Teacher Side Hustles to Boost Your Income Now

I could have totally listed it here because it’s for sure an online teacher side hustle.

But my point is that we make other people rich while struggling to get enough. Starting your own business positions you to earn 100% of the cost of your service or product.

Being a business owner allows you to become the middleman if you want- earning more money for less work. Would you like to know how it works? Go check it out here.

HOW ON EARTH can a teacher add another obligation to an already overburdened schedule?

Some of you will not be in a position right away to be business owners. Whatever the reasons may be; however, you can make plans to become one.

Most business owners will tell you that if your business is about something you are completely passionate about, it will not feel like WORK.

It will not feel like just another hat. It will not feel obtrusive or time-consuming. I agree! I love everything about all the hats (businesses) I am responsible for.

It may feel a little intimidating to start a business, but it all starts with an idea and a single step in that direction, just like any other business venture.

Find someone else who is in that space and learn from those who have already begun. Community is everything! Find a tribe doing what you are doing.

Platforms like Facebook are perfect for finding people with the same interest.

Starting a side job as a business owner does not have to be difficult. Anyone can obtain a DBA, apply for a separate or business bank account, and a website or even just a web page!

Out Of These, What Side Hustles For Teachers Best Fit You?

Surely at least one of these side jobs for teachers is ideal for your unique situation, whether you’re searching for something quick or more time-consuming.

There is no restriction on the kinds of online side jobs that educators can engage in.

When deciding which one(s) you want to attempt, be sure to take your abilities, interests, and availability into account.

Do you think having an online teacher side job is right for you? Not only are the possibilities endless, but the demand is there too.

Enjoy the perks of being a digital nomad, having a flexible schedule, the ability to work from any location with WIFI, and the opportunity to interact with students from around the words.

Who knows! Your side job just might become your full-time income.
